Nongpoh, May 27: A devastating road accident on National Highway 6 in Ri Bhoi early Sunday morning has left the community in shock. The tragic incident took place near Umran, a picturesque village known for its lush greenery and serene surroundings. The collision involved a Bolero Pickup and a Maruti Swift Dzire, two vehicles that now serve as reminders of the fragility of life on the road.

Reports from the authorities indicate that the accident occurred around 10:30 AM, shattering the peace of the tranquil village. The sight of the Bolero Pickup (registration No. ML 05 AB3102) and the Swift Dzire (registration No. AS 25 DC9118) mangled and broken serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of speeding and reckless driving.

Investigations have revealed that the Bolero Pickup, driven by Stanphan Ryntathiang, 21, from Patharlyndan in the Eastern West Khasi Hills District, was on its way to Nongpoh. Accompanying Ryntathiang were Breaksius Mawlong, 26, from Mawkriah East Khasi District, and Kamwadathmu Hadem, 35, from Krongshnong village in West Jaintia Hills District. The sudden loss of control near Umran on NH-06 led to the tragic collision with the Swift Dzire, which was travelling from Guwahati. The impact was devastating, resulting in injuries to all occupants of both vehicles.

The passengers in the Swift Dzire have been identified as Mr. Nikhil Harijan Balmiki (3), Mahesh Balmiki (34), Minoti Das (46), and Deepa Das Balmiki (28), all hailing from Azara, Guwahati, Assam.

Tragically, Stanphan Ryntathiang, the driver of the Bolero Pickup, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Nongpoh Civil Hospital. The authorities conducted an inquest in the presence of Ryntathiang’s grieving family, who opted out of a postmortem examination, citing no suspicion of foul play. The body was then handed over to the relatives for the final rites.

Both vehicles have been towed to the Umsning Police Station for further investigation and safekeeping, as the community mourns the loss and prays for the speedy recovery of the injured.
