Security Concerns in Johor Baru

In a recent address at the monthly assembly at the Johor police contingent headquarters in Johor Baru, the Johor police chief, M. Kumar, highlighted the ongoing security concerns in the region. He pointed out that the Special Branch is closely monitoring groups with extremist ideologies to prevent any potential threats to Malaysia.

Kumar emphasised the importance of keeping a watchful eye on individuals and groups known for radical ideologies. According to him, the Special Branch is actively gathering information on these groups to understand their behaviour patterns. Identifying radical thoughts within society can be challenging, which is why early prevention is crucial.

He mentioned that indicators of extremist activities may include changes in behaviour and suspicious activities. The tragic attack on the Ulu Tiram police station, where two policemen were killed, serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by radical extremists.

The fatal incident at the Ulu Tiram police station on May 17 shook the community, as a 21-year-old assailant armed with a machete attacked the policemen on duty. The suspect, believed to have extremist leanings, was later shot dead in a gun battle with law enforcement.

Initial investigations linked the suspect to the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), a notorious terror organisation known for its involvement in the 2002 Bali bombings. The incident highlighted the need for constant vigilance and proactive measures to combat radical extremism.

Drug Offences in Johor

In addition to security concerns, the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) in Johor has been cracking down on drug offences in the region. Kumar revealed that 8,652 individuals were arrested for various drug-related crimes from the beginning of the year until last month.

Johor ranks third in terms of drug seizures among police contingents, with authorities confiscating 1.72 tonnes of illicit drugs valued at RM13.37 million. The state NCID also seized assets worth RM5.31 million from eight local drug trafficking syndicates.

As of April this year, a total of 292 individuals have been arrested, while 68 others are detained under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) (Amendment) Act 1985. The relentless efforts of law enforcement agencies are essential in combating the scourge of drug trafficking in the region.
