Bengaluru: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has solved an 11-year-old murder case in Bengaluru involving Vijaya Pai, where her husband was initially arrested but later released without charges. It has now been found out that Vijaya was gang-raped before being murdered and the CID has arrested and charged three men, including one of her husband’s colleagues, for the crimes of murder and gang rape.

The case goes back to February 2013, when Balakrishna Pai, an employee at Canara Bank’s Mahalakshmi Layout branch and a resident of Sanjaynagar, filed a complaint after his wife went missing since she did not return from her job in Electronics City. A few days later, Chikkajala police found a woman’s body, which Balakrishna identified as his wife.

The Sanjaynagar police had arrested Pai, accusing him of murdering his wife. He was held in judicial custody for 90 days, but the police did not file charges against him due to lack of evidence. The police had submitted two final closure reports as they were unable to find the accused. Balakrishna Pai then appealed to the High Court for a fresh investigation, and the court assigned the case to the CID. Eleven years after the crime, the CID arrested three men in connection with the murder and gang rape.

Recollection of the Tragic Incident

Recalling his arrest, Pai told The Times of India, “On one hand, I had lost my wife, that too in a brutal way. On the other, I was imprisoned stating I had killed her. I was totally shattered and lost confidence in our system, particularly the police. After coming out of jail, I decided to act legally against them for their wrong acts. No one else should undergo what I did.”

According to the CID, a reexamination of all the evidence collected by the local police, including Call Detail Records (CDR) from the day she went missing, led to a breakthrough in the case, The Hindu reported.

Arrest of the Suspects

The CID arrested three people: former Canara Bank manager Narasimha Murthy, 65, and his two associates, Deepak C, 38, and Hariprasad, 45, from Sahakarnagar. Pai worked at the same branch where Murthy was the manager. The accused allegedly gang-raped the deceased before killing her and disposing of her body in Chikkajala.
