The gang operated by committing thefts in crowded areas and selling the stolen phones to receivers involved in the unlawful transport of handsets. The police have seized 713 smartphones and advised citizens to report any theft incidents promptly to avoid such criminal activities.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Police Commissioner’s Task Force recently made a significant breakthrough by uncovering an international smartphones smuggling and mobile phone theft ring. This operation led to the arrest of 31 individuals, including a Sudanese national, in connection with the criminal activities.
Seizure of Illegal Goods
During the raid, law enforcement officers confiscated a total of 713 smartphones, along with an auto-rickshaw, two computers, and a laptop. The total value of the seized items is estimated to be over Rs. 2 crore. Among the arrested individuals, 15 were identified as phone snatchers, while 11 were receivers of stolen phones. Additionally, four individuals worked as technicians who specialized in unlocking stolen mobile phones and tampering with IMEI numbers.
Identification of the Main Suspect
The Sudanese national arrested in connection with the criminal network was identified as Mohammed Musa Hassan Gamaralanbia, a 26-year-old phone accessories businessman. He resided in Bhismillah Residency in Nanalnagar and hailed from Gabr at Khartoum, Sudan.
Pattern of Crime in Hyderabad
Hyderabad has experienced a surge in mobile phone snatchings, with some incidents even resulting in fatalities. Upon investigation, authorities discovered a well-organized criminal network involved in the theft of cell phones and their subsequent distribution for illegal profits.
Operational Details
The criminal network dismantled stolen cell phones in underground markets, where components such as screens, cameras, and speakers were repurposed as replacement parts for damaged devices. These refurbished components were then sold at discounted rates, attracting customers seeking cost-effective repairs.
Previous Incidents and Task Force Action
Prior to this operation, the Task Force had successfully dismantled a similar network engaged in stolen cell phone rackets. The modus operandi of the perpetrators involved targeting crowded areas like stations, wine shops, and public gatherings to carry out thefts.
Collaboration Among Criminals
The gang members collaborated to steal cell phones and sell them to receivers who had connections with skilled technicians capable of unlocking devices and altering IMEI numbers. The receivers incentivized snatchers with advance payments to procure bulk quantities of stolen phones, which were later exported illegally by the Sudanese national.
Public Advisory and Warning
Authorities urge citizens to remain vigilant in crowded places and report any theft or snatching incidents promptly. Mobile shop owners are also cautioned against engaging in the purchase or sale of stolen cell phones or tampering with IMEI numbers, as strict legal action will be taken against offenders.
