Three dangerous sex offenders have been released within six weeks, and they will all be residing amongst us. The police have issued warnings. Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke has asked Corrections Canada to proportionally release offenders throughout British Columbia, not just in Surrey.

Recent concerns have been raised in Surrey over the release of dangerous sex offenders into the community. Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke and the Surrey Board of Trade (SBOT) have expressed profound concern and frustration regarding the matter. They are also calling for a comprehensive review of the current laws and protocols concerning the sentencing, release, and monitoring of dangerous sex offenders who are at high risk of re-offending.

The most recent release that has sparked outrage involves Ezaz Razak, who has been identified as a significant threat to vulnerable women and intimate partners. Razak, who was convicted of sexually assaulting two women in 2017, is set to be released back into the community after serving his federal sentence.

Mayor Locke has strongly condemned the release, calling it “unconscionable.” She has urged the public to report any sighting of Razak engaging in suspicious behavior and has demanded a review of the laws governing the release of dangerous offenders to better protect communities from harm.

In a letter to BC’s Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth and BC’s Attorney General Niki Sharma, SBOT president Anita Huberman highlighted the potential negative impacts of releasing dangerous offenders on businesses and the general public. The safety and well-being of employees, customers, and the community at large are paramount concerns.

The Surrey Board of Trade is calling for a thorough review of the laws and protocols related to the release of high-risk offenders to ensure the safety and security of all communities in British Columbia.

Authorities have outlined a series of conditions that Ezaz Razak must adhere to upon his release, including obeying a curfew and abstaining from alcohol and drugs. Anyone witnessing Razak violating these conditions is urged to contact the authorities immediately.

Earlier this year, two other dangerous sex offenders, Leonard Ramstead and Michal Popek, were also released in Surrey, prompting Mayor Locke to call for a more equitable distribution of released offenders across all BC jurisdictions. She emphasized the need for rigorous monitoring to prevent further risks to residents and strain on police services.

Michal Popek, convicted in 2020 of sexually assaulting four women from 2015-2016, poses a risk to adolescent girls and adult women, including strangers.

Leonard Ramstead, convicted in 2019 of sexual interference of a person under 16-years-old and in 2021 of sexual interference of a person under 14-years-old, poses a risk to young children and adolescent girls.
