The Incident in Oakley
The incident took place in April 2002 near Laurel Road in Oakley, California. A juvenile female was out walking her dog when she was approached by a man who emerged from a vehicle, brandishing a gun. The man proceeded to order the young girl into the back seat of the vehicle and forced her to perform several sexual acts at gunpoint. Miraculously, the juvenile managed to escape and sought help from a nearby house, leading to the involvement of law enforcement.
The Breakthrough in the Investigation
For years, the case remained unsolved until a crucial breakthrough in 2022. DNA evidence collected at the scene of the crime in 2002 was entered into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), a national database that stores DNA profiles from various sources. Through a CODIS hit, Oakley Police were alerted to a potential DNA match, leading them to a suspect residing in Northern Idaho.
The Coordinated Effort
Oakley Police Detectives Gill and Pistello, in collaboration with the US Marshals Service, Coeur d’Alene Police Department, and the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, travelled to Idaho to serve a search warrant for DNA collection from the lead suspect. The DNA obtained from the suspect was a direct match to the DNA recovered from the crime scene in 2002, solidifying the case against him.

On May 16, 2024, a joint operation involving the United States Marshals Service, Coeur d’Alene Police Department, and Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office resulted in the arrest of Eric J. Ferguson, a 49-year-old male from Rathdrum, Idaho. Ferguson, a former resident of the East Contra Costa County area, was charged with rape of an incompetent person, forcible oral copulation, and kidnapping for rape.
