Tragic Death of 49-Year-Old Hiker on Mount Shasta

Last week, a tragic incident occurred on Mount Shasta in Northern California, where a 49-year-old man collapsed and died while hiking. The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office received an emergency notification just before 7 p.m. on May 17th, alerting them to the situation at 9,500 feet of elevation up Avalanche Gulch.

Mount Shasta: A Volcanic Beauty

Mount Shasta is a stunning volcanic mountain that stands tall at 14,179 feet. Located in Northern California, this majestic peak is a popular destination for hikers and climbers seeking adventure and breathtaking views. The mountain is approximately 14 miles away from the city of Mount Shasta, which shares its name.

Rescue Efforts Hindered by Darkness

Upon receiving the distress call, the sheriff’s search and rescue coordinator sprang into action, notifying the Forest Service Climbing Rangers and the California Highway Patrol’s Air Operations. However, due to the onset of darkness, hoist operations to rescue the collapsed hiker, later identified as David Lopez of Campbell, California, were not feasible.

Valiant Efforts to Save a Life

Lopez’s climbing partner, who was with him at the time of the incident, immediately began performing CPR in a bid to save his companion’s life. Emergency responders later took over, but despite their best efforts, Lopez could not be resuscitated. He was then transported down to Bunny Flats by the Forest Service Climbing Rangers and the sheriff’s office search and rescue team.
