A man has been identified as 50-year-old William Foster Wells Jr. after being involved in a police chase that resulted in a serious crash in Rockwell, Eastern Rowan County. Rockwell Police Chief Cody Trexler confirmed on Thursday that Wells is currently hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the incident. Fortunately, Wells is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

Authorities have pending charges against Wells for felony flee to elude, with the possibility of additional charges being filed soon. These potential charges are related to evidence recovered from a search warrant executed on Wells’ vehicle. In addition to Wells, there was a dog in the car at the time of the crash, which was ejected but miraculously unharmed. The dog, confirmed to be Wells’ pet, was safely retrieved by a family member at the scene. Due to the presence of the dog, police are also considering charging Wells with cruelty to animals.

The incident unfolded when a Rockwell police officer observed Wells driving at speeds exceeding 100 mph along U.S. Highway 52 in downtown Rockwell around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. Upon attempting to pull Wells over, he led the officer on a high-speed chase that ultimately ended in a crash on Wyatt Grove Church Road near the Stokes Ferry Road intersection.

This is not the first time Wells has faced legal trouble following a crash. In a previous incident on July 30, 2023, Wells was convicted of misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon and willful or wanton injury to real property. During that episode, Wells crashed his truck into a mobile home and attempted to assault the occupants. Subsequently, he was shot twice by a resident of the mobile home as a defensive measure. This earlier incident sheds light on Wells’ history of reckless behaviour leading to dangerous consequences.
