Early Friday morning, authorities apprehended a man who had scaled a communications tower in Winter Park, Florida, a quaint and serene town known for its charming streets lined with oak trees and Spanish moss.
FOX 35 journalists captured footage on Thursday afternoon of an individual perched at the summit of a vibrant red communications tower situated near Palm Avenue, a bustling street that runs through the heart of Winter Park.
The Winter Park Police Department’s crisis negotiations team swiftly responded to the incident in the 1900 block of Palm Avenue at 3 p.m. on Thursday. Upon arrival, officers identified the man as 38-year-old Richard Smith, who had ascended to the top of the tower.
Over the course of several hours, skilled negotiators engaged in peaceful dialogue with Smith, coaxing him to descend from his precarious perch. Just before 3:30 a.m. on Friday, Smith finally descended from the tower, bringing the tense standoff to an end.

Following his descent, Smith was promptly taken into custody on charges including burglary to an unoccupied structure, criminal mischief exceeding $1,000, and trespassing.
