On the morning of May 8th, 2024, a high-speed pursuit initiated near Ivanhoe, MN, by the Lincoln County, MN Sheriff’s Office, crossed into South Dakota. The suspect vehicle, a 2012 GMC Acadia, was reported traveling over 100mph on SD30. The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took over the pursuit near 473rd Ave on SD30. Despite attempts to stop the vehicle with stop sticks, the pursuit continued until the vehicle exited at MM127 and turned west on 217th St. The driver, identified as Coty Tellinghuisen, 39, of Pipestone, MN, was arrested. Later that day, a rollover involving Tyler Fairchild, 25, of Brookings, SD, was reported.

The Dramatic Police Chase Across State Lines

{KXLG – Brookings County, SD} On the morning of May 8th, 2024, a high-speed pursuit initiated near Ivanhoe, MN, by the Lincoln County, MN Sheriff’s Office, crossed into South Dakota. The pursuit began after drug activity was observed. The suspect vehicle, a 2012 GMC Acadia, was reported traveling over 100mph on SD30.

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office took over the pursuit near 473rd Ave on SD30. The chase continued southbound on I29, with the Brookings Police Department and South Dakota State University Police Department providing visual deterrence to prevent the pursuit from entering Brookings City limits.

Despite attempts to stop the vehicle with stop sticks, the pursuit continued until the vehicle exited at MM127 and turned west on 217th St. Assistance was requested from Moody County and Lake County Sheriff’s Offices as the chase continued down rural highways and gravel roads.

The pursuit ended approximately 2 miles south of Colman when the suspect vehicle entered a residence. The driver, identified as Coty Tellinghuisen, 39, of Pipestone, MN, was found hiding in a shed on the property and was arrested. Tellinghuisen was taken to the Brookings County Detention Center and charged with Aggravated Eluding, Reckless Driving, Burglary, and five warrants for his arrest from Minnesota.

The Rollover Incident on 485th Ave

Later that day, at 1:47 pm, the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and Hendricks Ambulance were dispatched to a rollover on 485th Ave near 200th St. The driver, Tyler Fairchild, 25, of Brookings, SD, had been operating a 1996 International 4700 dump truck when it entered the east ditch and rolled.

Fairchild, who was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the rollover, was treated at the scene by Hendricks Ambulance and taken to Hendricks Hospital for unknown injuries. He was issued a citation for failing to wear his seatbelt. The truck, carrying three tons of rock and pavers, sustained an estimated $14,000 in damage. The incident remains under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
