St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News)- Authorities have identified the Minnesota deputies who shot a knife-wielding suspect last week in Chanhassen, a western Twin Cities suburb. The incident, which took place on May 4, involved deputies from the Carver County Sheriff’s Office responding to a domestic incident at a home in the area.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) was called to investigate the officer-involved shooting. Preliminary reports revealed that two deputies fired their service weapons at the suspect, striking him. The man, identified as 31-year-old Derrek West of Bloomington, was given immediate medical attention at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital, where he is currently in stable condition.

The BCA recently released the names of the deputies involved in the shooting. James Horvath, with 19 years of law enforcement experience, and Benjamin Sinko, with 4.5 years in law enforcement, were the officers who fired on West. The BCA’s news release stated that West emerged from the home wearing a white face covering and brandishing a knife while deputies were speaking with the person who reported the domestic incident.

According to the BCA, West ignored commands from the deputies to drop the knife and charged towards them. This action led to the deputies firing multiple shots at West in self-defense. The officers then provided aid to West and recovered a 10-inch knife at the scene, along with several shell casings.

Body-worn camera footage captured by deputies Horvath and Sinko is currently under review as part of the ongoing investigation. Once the BCA completes its inquiry, the findings will be presented to the Carver County Attorney’s Office for further review.
