A tragic incident occurred in Chicago’s South Side during an early morning street takeover, resulting in the death of a 20-year-old man, Guillermo Caballero Jr., known to his loved ones as Memo Jr. Caballero Jr. was driving his black Honda Accord when he was fatally shot by participants in the street takeover.

The incident took place around 3:17 a.m. at the intersection of 59th Street and Western Avenue. A mob of vehicles had taken over the intersection, trapping Caballero Jr. in the ring of cars and pedestrians as he attempted to exit his vehicle. Two individuals involved in the street takeover opened fire on Caballero Jr.’s car, causing him to be struck by gunfire through his windshield.

Upon arrival at the scene, Chicago police officers observed 20 to 50 vehicles speeding away from the intersection. A video shared by CWB Chicago captured the chaos as cars and people fled the scene when the gunfire erupted.

Illegal street takeovers, also known as “sideshows,” have been a persistent issue in both the city and suburbs. These highly organized events involve cars and trucks swarming an intersection or parking lot for a brief period, causing fear and anxiety among bystanders. The gatherings are often coordinated through social media platforms.

Caballero Jr., the eldest of three siblings, was employed at Foot Locker and had aspirations of pursuing a career in sales. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist his family with funeral expenses.
