A woman from Palm Beach County was recently arrested for attempting to hire a hitman to kill two witnesses who testified against her teenage son. The son, Manuel Marcos Cardona, was convicted in the stabbing death of a man during a 5-year-old’s birthday party. Josefina Cardona-Cardona, 43, believed that the witnesses were responsible for her son’s imprisonment and sought to take matters into her own hands. Little did she know, the man she thought was a hitman turned out to be an undercover agent.

The incident took place in Lake Worth, where Manuel, then 14 years old, stabbed 19-year-old Andres Perez-Alvarado during a brawl at the birthday party. Perez-Alvarado tragically passed away the following day at the hospital. Manuel pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 15 years in prison earlier this year.

The plot to eliminate the witnesses was uncovered when an informant tipped off Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office detectives in April. The informant revealed that a woman known as “Maria” was looking to hire someone to carry out the killings. After obtaining Cardona-Cardona’s photo and phone number, which belonged to the suspect, detectives set up a meeting with her and the undercover agent near a high school in Lake Worth Beach.

During their meeting, Cardona-Cardona identified the witnesses as “Catalina” and “Alonso” and showed photos of them to the undercover agent. She was captured on video agreeing to pay $8,000 for the murders and even offered a gold chain as collateral. Subsequent meetings revealed that she was planning to obtain the funds from her family in Guatemala.
