The Incident

Five children, including a teenage daughter of one of the suspected shooters, were endangered during a drive-by shooting incident earlier this year in Copperas Cove, a small town in Texas. According to Copperas Cove police, the incident took place at a home in the 2400 block of Spirit Dancer Drive.

The Suspects

At the end of April, a Coryell County grand jury indicted three Cove men on a total of 27 felony counts. Shields Michael Chambers, 24, Robert Wayne Darley, 32, and Chance Taylor Fountaine, 31, each were indicted on seven counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of tampering with or fabricating evidence, and one count of endangering a child through criminal negligence. All three men were being held in the Coryell County Jail on Wednesday with bonds of at least $600,000.

The Investigation

According to arrest affidavits obtained by the Herald this week, the children ranged in age from three to 13 years old. Just after 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 27, Cove police responded to a 911 call about multiple shots fired at the home on Spirit Dancer Drive. Officers found six adults and four children at the scene, including a three-year-old boy. Thankfully, no one was injured during the incident.

The Confrontation

One of the men who lived at the house but was not home when the shooting occurred told officers that earlier that day, he had a confrontation with people at a house in the 1100 block of South 23rd Street. The man went to the residence to buy a car from a woman named Heather but felt like it was a setup. Two males at that residence pointed guns at him, and he left.

Surveillance Footage

The arrest affidavits mention two surveillance videos—one from the accusers’ home and the other from the residence of the accused—that became part of the investigation. A surveillance video from the children’s room at the home on Spirit Dancer allegedly depicted the shooting as it happened. Security cameras were also at the home on South 23rd Street, capturing footage of the suspects carrying guns into the house after the shooting.

Conclusion

The incident in Copperas Cove was a harrowing experience for the children and adults involved. The indictment of the three men involved sheds light on the seriousness of the situation and the potential consequences of their actions. It serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and responsible gun ownership in communities across the country.
