White House Security Tested Again as Driver Crashes Into Barricade
White House security faced another challenge on Friday when the United States Secret Service confirmed the fate of a driver who crashed into a barricade near 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The incident occurred on Saturday night, with emergency services responding to a reported vehicular accident.
The Secret Service released a statement saying that the driver was “discovered deceased” before they could provide any aid. The agency detailed the events, stating that a vehicle traveling at a high speed collided with an outer perimeter gate on the White House complex shortly before 10:30 pm on May 4th.
Anthony Guglielmi, chief of communications for the USSS, took to social media to provide updates on the situation. He mentioned that limited traffic closures were in effect as Secret Service teams, @dcfireems, and @DCPoliceDept investigated the fatal crash. Guglielmi reassured the public that there was no threat or public safety implications.
The Secret Service’s statement emphasized that there was no threat to the White House and that the investigation was ongoing. The Washington Metropolitan Police Department Crash Investigation Unit would be handling the fatal crash portion of the incident.

This incident is not the first of its kind to happen near the White House. In January, an arrest was made outside the White House perimeter during an investigation into the cause and manner of the incident. Similarly, in May 2023, a suspect was arrested after crashing a U-Haul truck into a White House barricade containing a Nazi flag, duct tape, and a notebook.
Even when traveling, the Secret Service must remain vigilant for vehicular mishaps. In December, President Biden was leaving his 2024 campaign office in Wilmington, Delaware, when a vehicle crashed into his motorcade, blocking off the street. Video footage showed law enforcement surrounding the vehicle and questioning the driver.
