Gun violence in London has seen a significant decrease this year, with only three cases of gunfire reported compared to 15 incidents at the same time last year. This marks an 80 per cent drop in shootings, a welcome change after the city experienced its second-worst year for gun violence in 2023.
Factors Contributing to the Decrease
The London Police credit a variety of factors for the significant drop in gunfire. One key initiative was Project SAFE, a three-month investigation into firearms and weapons smuggling in spring 2023. This operation resulted in the seizure of 26 guns and 70 individuals being charged with a combined total of 550 offences, directly impacting the reduction in shootings.
Additionally, the police collaborated with the Middlesex Crown Attorney’s office to ensure that individuals charged with gun-related offences were either kept behind bars or released under stricter bail conditions. Regular checks were conducted to ensure that these individuals were following their bail conditions. It was discovered that 33 of the people arrested in Project SAFE were on bail at the time.
