A farmer tragically lost his life, and three others, including a Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel, were injured during a shootout in Cox’s Bazar Sadar. This incident occurred amid a RAB raid on a criminal ring responsible for kidnapping an NGO worker.

Details of the Operation

The head of the criminal group, identified as Mohammad Farhad or Shere Farhad, was apprehended with a foreign firearm during the operation conducted by the elite police force. The raid took place around 7:30 pm in the Murapara area of Bharuakhali Union, as reported by Lt Col HM Sajjad Hossain, commander of the RAB-15 Cox’s Bazar Battalion.

Victims and Perpetrators

The deceased farmer was named Mohammad Baitullah, aged 45, from Chowdhurypara in the union. The injured individuals were RAB ASI Mohammad Sarwar, Shafi Ullah (40), and Md Saiman (20), all from Chowdhurypara. The detainee, Farhad, hails from Ghona Para in Bharuakhali.

Criminal Activities and Kidnapping

RAB revealed that Farhad led a criminal gang in the Union and was implicated in seven cases, including murder, kidnapping, robbery, and extortion. The kidnapping victim, Md Masud Chowdhury, aged 35, worked as a field worker for the Eidgaon branch of the private organisation Prottyashi.

Masud was abducted by a group of criminals led by Farhad while collecting money for a micro credit loan in Murapara. Following the abduction, a joint operation was launched by RAB and local residents to rescue Masud. However, during the operation, a shootout ensued when the criminals opened fire on the RAB team, resulting in casualties.

Arrest and Continued Operation

Additional RAB personnel arrived at the scene to arrest the perpetrators. Farhad, who sustained gunshot wounds, was captured with a shotgun in the hill area and is currently receiving treatment at the Sadar Hospital. Masud was successfully rescued, and RAB officials are actively pursuing the arrest of other individuals involved in the incident.
