Tragic Climbing Accident in Denali National Park
A tragic accident occurred in Alaska’s Denali National Park and Preserve, resulting in the death of climber Robbi Mecus and serious injuries to her climbing partner. The incident took place on the southeast face of the 8,400-foot Mount Johnson, where Mecus, a 52-year-old from Keene Valley, New York, fell approximately 1,000 feet while on a steep, technical route.
Rescue Efforts and Recovery
Following the fall, another climbing party witnessed the incident and reported it to park officials. They descended to the location of the climbers and confirmed Mecus’ death. The injured climber, a 30-year-old woman from California, was tended to in a snow cave until rescue efforts could be initiated. A rescue helicopter and mountaineering rangers were able to rescue the injured climber the following day, and she was flown to an Anchorage hospital for further medical care.
Despite deteriorating weather conditions, the rescue team attempted to recover Mecus’ body but had to retreat. Fortunately, improved weather on Saturday morning allowed for the successful retrieval of her remains.
Tributes to a Dedicated Ranger
New York Department of Environmental Conservation interim Commissioner Sean Mahar paid tribute to Mecus, describing her as an “incredible, passionate ranger” who demonstrated unwavering dedication to protecting the environment and serving the community. Mahar highlighted Mecus’ 25-year career with DEC, during which she led numerous rescues, searches, and educational initiatives.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Mecus co-founded the Adirondack Queer Ice Festival, an inclusive LGBTQ event that celebrates diversity and creates a welcoming space for members of the queer community. Her legacy of advocacy and inclusivity will continue to inspire others in the outdoor community.
