The chain of events leading to Monsalve Rojas’ untimely death began when a woman, who had been the victim of a burglary the previous night, tracked her stolen electronic device to Smith’s vehicle, a gold Chevrolet Suburban parked at East 48th Street and South Central Avenue. Upon approaching the SUV and signaling the driver to stop, the police were met with a swift response as Smith accelerated down Central Avenue at high speeds. A pursuit ensued, during which the SUV collided with Monsalve Rojas, several vehicles, and a telephone pole before overturning.

Smith attempted to flee the scene on foot but was apprehended shortly after. He now faces charges of felony evading causing death, in addition to outstanding warrants that have raised his bail amount to $327,000. The stolen vehicle was found to contain property belonging to multiple individuals.
