Los Angeles Dodgers Star Shohei Ohtani Shares First Look at New Wife Mamiko Tanaka
Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani recently tied the knot with his new wife, Mamiko Tanaka, a Japanese basketball star. The public got their first glimpse of the happy couple in a photo shared by the Dodgers on Thursday.
Mamiko Tanaka, a 5-foot-11 center who most recently played for Fujitsu Red Wave, accompanied Ohtani to Seoul, South Korea, where the Dodgers will begin their 2024 season against the San Diego Padres.
Ohtani had previously announced his marriage in late February, but had not revealed his wife’s identity until now. He shared on Instagram, “Not only have I began a new chapter in my career with the Dodgers but I also have began a new life with someone from my Native country of Japan who is very special to me and I wanted everyone to know I am now married.”
Both the Dodgers and Ohtani himself shared photos of the couple, including fellow Dodger Yoshinobu Yamamoto and translator Ippei Mizuhara, marking the first public appearance of Tanaka.
Tanaka, 27, is a standout athlete who attended Waseeda University in Tokyo and chose to play basketball in Japan rather than pursue a career in the WNBA. She brings her own athletic prowess to the marriage, adding to the power couple dynamic.
The Dodgers are in Seoul as part of the 2024 MLB World Tour: Seoul Series, where they will play exhibition games against Korean teams before kicking off the season opener against the Padres.
