Man Sentenced to Four Years for Threatening Property Owner Near Rogersville

ROGERSVILLE — A man who was spotlighting deer and threatened a property owner near Rogersville with a gun has been sentenced to four years in Hawkins County Criminal Court. William Franklin “Willie” Stamey Jr., 22, of Whitesburg, appeared in Hawkins County Circuit Court and pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, spotlighting deer, hunting from a motor vehicle, and hunting big game in closed season offenses.

Incident Details in Rogersville

On August 16, 2023, shortly before midnight, HCSO Deputy Robert Rios responded to a residence on McKinney Chapel Road in Rogersville on a complaint of a reckless driver in an SUV. A witness reported to Hawkins County Central Dispatch that someone in the vehicle was armed and shots may have been fired. The witness went back to the area where the incident occurred, and the vehicle continued on West Bear Hollow Road.

Traffic Stop and Arrest

Deputy Rios located the SUV near Amis Mill Eatery and conducted a traffic stop. Stamey, the front seat passenger, was identified at the scene. A witness recounted hearing shots and witnessing an argument between an occupant of the SUV and a resident. Stamey allegedly pointed a shotgun at the witness and threatened to kill him before the driver sped away.

Illegal Poaching Activities

Further investigation by TWRA revealed evidence of poaching activities by Stamey. A deer carcass was found in Stamey’s backyard, and a search warrant executed at his residence uncovered eleven sets of deer antlers that he admitted to poaching. Stamey also confessed to shooting a bearded hen turkey in 2022 without reporting it as required by law.
