Accident – Death – Obituary News : Paul Elmstrand and Cindy Elmstrand-Castruita first crossed paths in kindergarten. It wasn’t until third grade at Isanti Elementary that they found themselves in the same class for the first time. By fourth grade, they were competing against each other for the coveted position of class president, with Cindy emerging victorious.

Reflecting on their childhood rivalry, Cindy fondly recalls teasing Paul about her win. However, fate had other plans, as Paul would go on to win the title of class president when they reached high school. This marked the beginning of a beautiful relationship that would stand the test of time.

After growing up together and attending Cambridge-Isanti High School as high school sweethearts, Paul and Cindy tied the knot in 2018. They settled down in Chaska, where they built a life filled with love and cherished memories.

Tragically, on Sunday, Feb. 18, Paul, along with Burnsville Police Officer Matthew Ruge and Firefighter/Paramedic Adam Finseth, lost their lives while responding to a domestic call. The gunman, later identified as Shannon Gooden, took his own life after the incident. The loss of Paul left a void in Cindy’s life that could never be filled.

Describing her late husband, Cindy speaks of Paul’s kindness and selflessness. She recalls their bus rides to school in ninth grade, where Paul always made her feel safe and cared for. Their relationship blossomed over the years, with Paul’s unwavering support and love shining through in every gesture.

Despite facing challenges and briefly parting ways during high school, Paul and Cindy’s bond only grew stronger with time. Their love story reached a pivotal moment during a walk in their favourite park at Lake George in Anoka, where Paul surprised Cindy with a heartfelt proposal before she embarked on a study abroad trip to Spain.

Following their marriage and graduation from college, the couple started a family and moved to a townhouse in Chaska. Paul’s dedication to his role as a Burnsville police officer since 2019 was matched only by his commitment to his family. His unwavering love and support for Cindy and their two children, Maria and Mateo, defined him as a devoted husband and father.

Paul’s faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him in his interactions with others and shaping his values. Close friends, such as Pastor Austin Holmes and his wife Lea, remember Paul for his deep-rooted beliefs and compassionate nature. Paul’s willingness to help others and his acts of kindness left a lasting impact on those around him.

As the community mourns the loss of Paul Elmstrand, his legacy of love, faith, and selflessness lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. His memory serves as a reminder to overcome evil with good and to cherish the moments shared with loved ones. Paul’s light will continue to shine bright in the lives of those he touched, leaving a lasting legacy of love and compassion..
