A Conflict at a Birthday Party in East Austin Leads to Fatal Shooting

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Recent court documents reveal that a conflict at a birthday party in November resulted in a tragic and fatal shooting in east Austin. According to the records filed in January, 18-year-old Andrew Dominic Aviles has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of a 16-year-old. The court documents also indicate that during the incident, a 15-year-old was also shot.

The U.S. Marshals-led Lone Star Fugitive Task Force arrested Aviles on January 10th in Elgin, Texas, in relation to the shooting. The arrest came after an extensive investigation into the events that unfolded during the birthday party.

KXAN News reached out to Aviles’ attorney for a statement but has not received a response at the time of writing this article. Any updates will be provided as soon as they become available.

According to court documents, the incident occurred on November 25th when officers from the Austin Police Department responded to reports of gunshots in the 2500 block of Sol Wilson Avenue. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered a 16-year-old with a gunshot wound to the chest in the front yard of a residence. Another teenager was also found with a gunshot wound, as stated in an affidavit.

The court documents further reveal that the police found signs of a disturbance inside the residence, along with a significant number of bullet casings scattered across the front yard. Witness statements indicate that the disturbance occurred during a birthday party for the 16-year-old victim, when a group of “unwanted” guests arrived. A verbal altercation ensued, resulting in the group being asked to leave, as mentioned in the affidavit.

According to the court documents, the group initially left the premises but returned shortly after with firearms. A witness informed the police that the 16-year-old victim and others from the party left the residence, presumably to confront the unwanted guests. It was during this confrontation that gunshots were heard, according to the witness.

Based on personal descriptions provided by witnesses and family members of the deceased 16-year-old, Aviles was identified as a suspect in the shooting. Following further investigation, Aviles was booked in the Travis County Jail on unrelated charges in early December. During a police interview on December 5th, Aviles admitted to being present at the party and handling a firearm while there.

As of Wednesday, Aviles remains in custody at the Travis County Jail, charged with murder and held on a bond of $750,000.
