Brownfield Man Fatally Shot by Texas Game Warden After Vehicle Pursuit

In a tragic incident last month, a 53-year-old man from Brownfield, Texas, was shot and killed by a Texas game warden following a vehicle pursuit. The victim has been identified as Kevin Ray Mills.

According to a report filed by Texas Parks and Wildlife Officials, the incident unfolded after Brownfield police responded to a disturbance at a residence in the 500 block of East Hill Street. The nature of the disturbance has not been disclosed in the report. Upon arrival, officers encountered Mills, who was listed as a suspect, and attempted to apprehend him. However, Mills managed to flee the scene in a motor vehicle, leading to a subsequent pursuit.

The chase initially began in Brownfield but extended to Gaines, covering a distance of approximately one hour. Poor weather conditions forced the Brownfield police to end their pursuit outside the city limits when they lost sight of Mills’ vehicle.

It was during this time that a Texas Parks and Wildlife game warden, patrolling the area, spotted the fleeing vehicle south of Brownfield on State Highway 137. In an attempt to disable the vehicle, the warden fired shots near the intersection of County Road 219. However, despite being struck by gunfire, Mills continued to drive away, prompting the game warden to give chase.

The pursuit took a westward turn on TX 83, but Mills suddenly changed direction and headed back east on the highway. At this point, the game warden fired his shotgun at Mills’ vehicle as it passed him.

The gunfire managed to strike the vehicle, but it failed to disable it, allowing the chase to proceed south on County Road 119 in Gaines County.

The chase eventually came to an end on CR 126 and East CR 115 in Gaines County. Mills exited his vehicle and approached the game warden, who identified himself as a police officer and aimed his shotgun at Mills. The game warden repeatedly ordered Mills to stay back and show his hands.

Despite the commands, Mills continued to advance towards the game warden in a threatening manner, repeatedly urging the officer to shoot him, according to the report. In response to the escalating threat, the game warden backed away while issuing commands before ultimately firing two shots, striking Mills.

Medical aid was immediately provided to Mills, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. The Texas Rangers and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Office of Internal Affairs are currently conducting an investigation into the shooting.
