Accident – Death – Obituary News :

MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio (WJW) — A Richfield man has been arrested and charged with kidnapping a police officer in Maple Heights and leading other officers on a high-speed chase.

The incident occurred on Monday, January 8, when Maple Heights police responded to a report of a man found slumped over the wheel of an SUV on Raymond Street, near the intersection of Northfield Road. Upon arrival, an officer approached the vehicle and turned it off, only to have the driver, later identified as Neil Z. Miller of Richfield, wake up.

As the officer began speaking to Miller, he allegedly turned the SUV back on and attempted to flee the scene. In the process, Miller put the car into gear and drove away with the officer still inside. Other officers quickly initiated a pursuit of the suspect’s vehicle, which eventually came to a stop long enough for the officer to escape. Miller then continued to lead Maple Heights officers on a chase through several communities, until it ended in Cuyahoga Heights.

Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident. Miller was taken into custody and arraigned in Garfield Heights Municipal Court on charges of kidnapping and fleeing or eluding, both of which are felony counts. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of criminal damaging. The judge set his bond at $50,000, or 10% cash or surety. Miller is scheduled to appear in court again on January 17.

The Maple Heights Police Department is commended for their swift response and apprehension of the suspect. This incident highlights the dangers that law enforcement officers face every day while carrying out their duties to protect and serve the community.
