The Incident
The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) reported that the incident took place shortly before 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, January 4. The Colorado State Patrol alerted CSPD about a multi-car collision on I-25 at the South Circle Drive exit.
The Sequence of Events
According to CSPD, the car responsible for the crash was traveling in the left lane of southbound I-25 when it drifted out of its lane, colliding with the center median. The impact caused the vehicle to rebound into traffic. The car then struck the front of an on-duty HCSO cruiser before rotating and hitting the rear of the patrol car a second time.
Extent of Damage
Both vehicles sustained significant damage and were rendered inoperable, necessitating their towing from the scene. The driver of the car that collided with the median, identified as Adam Russell, was taken into custody for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and other traffic-related charges.
Impact on Traffic
CSPD mentioned that the crash investigation resulted in the closure of all but one lane on I-25, causing traffic congestion and delays for motorists in the area.
