Off-Duty Deputy Survives Vicious Dog Mauling in Hinesville, Georgia

HINESVILLE, Ga. (WSAV) — In a shocking incident that occurred on December 18, an off-duty Liberty County deputy, identified as 56-year-old Ronald Hooks, narrowly escaped a brutal dog attack in Hinesville, Georgia. The police report obtained by News 3 sheds light on the terrifying ordeal that unfolded when Hooks was mauled by his neighbor’s dogs.

Hooks was in the process of repairing a fence when the dogs launched their vicious assault. Witnesses, including local dog owner Mara McStay, expressed their outrage at the incident and emphasized the need for responsible dog ownership.

McStay voiced her concern, saying, “I mean, people really need to take a rein on their dogs. I cannot imagine if this dog attacked a smaller child.” Her worries are justified, as the report reveals that these American Bulldogs had previously attacked and harmed a neighbor’s Chihuahua.

The incident has sparked a debate about the importance of responsible pet ownership. McStay, who owns a Chihuahua and terrier mix herself, shared her horror at the thought of her own beloved pet falling victim to such an attack. She emphasizes that owning a dog is a significant responsibility that should not be taken lightly.

The owner of the dogs responsible for the attack has been issued two citations for “vicious animals” and two citations for “leash law violation.” According to the report, the owner had owned the dogs for approximately two years but was unsure if their vaccinations were up-to-date.

McStay emphasizes the importance of adhering to dog codes and ordinances in Hinesville, stating, “It’s there for a reason… and a lot of times, I don’t want to put blame on a dog. The dog doesn’t really know any better. It’s the owner most of the time that is at fault when something bad happens.”

Deputy Hooks, who underwent multiple surgeries, is currently in recovery. The court date for the dog owner has been scheduled for January 17, 2024.
