Tyrone Police Investigating Two Separate Incidents Involving Dead Bodies
Tyrone police are currently conducting investigations into two separate incidents in which dead bodies were discovered in public areas within the city. These incidents have caused concern among residents and have prompted the police department to issue a statement providing details about the ongoing investigations.
Incident 1: Hostage Situation and Apparent Murder-Suicide
On December 19, officers from the Tyrone Police Department responded to a welfare check in the 500 block of McDade Street. They were alerted by a woman who reported that the father of her infant child had held them hostage overnight after allegedly killing his mother the previous day. The woman stated that the suspect had released them and left the area in a vehicle with the deceased.
Shortly after receiving this information, the suspect’s vehicle was discovered on fire in Fayetteville. The suspect was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, and the body of his deceased mother was also found in the car. The deceased has been identified as Sonya Reid, a 59-year-old resident of Tyrone. Police believe the suspect is her son, Khalid Auta, 32, also from Tyrone.
Detectives have thoroughly processed the deceased’s home for any potential evidence that could aid in the investigation. The investigation into this incident is ongoing, and the police department is committed to uncovering all relevant information.
Incident 2: Discovery of Deceased Woman near Former Tyrone Elementary School
In an unrelated incident, the body of a deceased adult female was found on the morning of December 18 in the vicinity of the former Tyrone Elementary School. The woman has been identified as Leian Somera, 46, who was reported missing on December 5 by her roommates.
While there is currently no indication of foul play, the police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. The body has been transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for an autopsy, which will provide further insights into the cause of death. The police department will continue to gather evidence and conduct interviews as part of the ongoing investigation.
Argument Escalation Leads to Arrest
In a separate incident in Tyrone, a man found himself behind bars after escalating an argument with representatives of a local auto repair business. The altercation took place at Sharpsburg Muffler on Shamrock Industrial Boulevard on December 15.
According to the police department, the suspect and his girlfriend visited the business to dispute charges and other civil matters. The suspect, already on probation, became increasingly agitated during the argument, threatening to cause harm to the business and its employees. He also physically assaulted his girlfriend when she attempted to calm him down.
The suspect, identified as Xavier Johnson, 51, from Fairburn, has been charged with terroristic threats and acts, simple battery/family violence, and violating a family violence order. He is currently in custody at the Fayette County Jail, awaiting further legal proceedings.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with a female who stated that the father of her infant child had killed his mother the previous day, held her and the child hostage overnight, and had just released them before leaving the area with the deceased in a vehicle.
A short time later, the suspect’s vehicle was discovered in Fayetteville, GA, engulfed in flames. The suspect was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, and the body of his deceased mother was also located in the vehicle.
The deceased has been identified as Sonya Reid, a 59-year-old resident of Tyrone, GA. The suspect is believed to be her son, Khalid Auta, a 32-year-old resident of Tyrone, GA.
Detectives from the Tyrone Police Department have conducted a thorough search of the deceased’s home for any evidence that could be valuable in the ongoing investigation. At this time, no further information is available, and the investigation continues.
