Bureau of Fire Protection-Davao Confirms Two Separate Fire Incidents in Davao City Resulting in One Fatality

The Bureau of Fire Protection-Davao (BFP-Davao) has confirmed that two distinct fire incidents occurred in Davao City on Monday morning, December 18, 2023, resulting in the loss of one life.

According to the report from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), the initial fire broke out at a foam factory located in Upper Communal, Barangay Tibungco. Tragically, one of the employees identified as Jefre Devalucos, aged 19, lost his life after being trapped inside the establishment.

The fire began at 7 a.m. and was successfully brought under control by 9 a.m.

Shortly after, around 9:23 a.m., a second fire erupted in Barangay Sta. Cruz, Leon Garcia, and Vicente Duterte, Agdao District. Firefighters worked diligently to extinguish the flames, and by 11:33 a.m., the fire was declared fully extinguished.

Initial investigations have revealed that a total of 16 families were affected by these unfortunate incidents. Among them, four were identified as sharers, six as renters, and six as borders. Additionally, two structures were completely destroyed, while one suffered partial damage.

The estimated cost of the damage to the houses amounted to P200,000, with damaged belongings valued at P873,000. Furthermore, P17,000 worth of items remain unidentified.

During the rescue operation in the area, a road crash occurred involving a fire truck from Barangay Lapu-Lapu, Agdao District, and another vehicle. Four passengers sustained minor injuries and were promptly assessed by Central 911 for medical treatment.

In a text message conversation with the City Fire District Intelligence and Investigation Section Chief (DCFDI), SFO4 Ramil Gillado, it was revealed that investigations are still ongoing to determine the origin of the fires and to assess the total damages caused by both incidents.

In the year 2023, Davao City witnessed a higher number of fire incidents, totaling more than 570 compared to the previous year’s count of 503.

The fire agency, in collaboration with the Davao City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), identified the devastating two-hour blaze that destroyed three Puroks in Soliman, Barangay Monteverde, on November 15, 2023, as one of the most destructive fire incidents during the last quarter of the year. This incident resulted in damages amounting to P8.419 million and displaced over 300 families.

It is worth noting that BFP-Davao has identified residential areas, squatter settlements, and informal housing as highly susceptible to fire incidents due to poor environmental conditions, shanty houses, substandard concrete buildings, and inadequately maintained electrical connections.

These areas are particularly vulnerable to hazards due to the presence of illegal and haphazard electrical connections, which can lead to the overheating of electrical appliances..
