Tragic Two-Vehicle Crash Claims Lives of Preble County Deputy and Another Driver

PREBLE COUNTY, Ohio — In a devastating incident that occurred in Gratis Twp., two lives were tragically cut short in a fatal two-vehicle crash. The victims have been identified as 34-year-old Joshua Hamilton, a dedicated Preble County Sheriff’s deputy from Eldorado, and 36-year-old Michael Gayheart II from West Elkton.
The Collision
The collision took place at approximately 4 a.m. in the 4700 block of state Route 503, a stretch of road between Gratis and West Alexandria. Hamilton, driving a marked 2018 Ford Explorer, was heading south on state Route 503, while Gayhart was traveling north. The two vehicles collided head-on, resulting in the tragic loss of their lives.
A concerned 911 caller, who stumbled upon the wreckage, reported that the crash seemed to have occurred recently. He described the scene, stating that the deputy was unresponsive, and the other vehicle had flipped onto its side, displaying significant damage to its front. The magnitude of the accident was evident as the caller exclaimed, “It’s bad.”
The Fatalities
Following the crash, Hamilton was swiftly transported to the Kettering Preble ER Campus in Eaton. Unfortunately, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the medical facility. Similarly, Gayhart succumbed to his injuries at the scene. It is important to note that neither vehicle had any passengers at the time of the collision.
A Dedicated Officer Remembered
Joshua Hamilton had faithfully served with the Preble County Sheriff’s Office since May 2022. He initially worked in the Preble County Jail before being promoted to road patrol in June. With his untimely passing, Hamilton leaves behind grieving parents and a 10-year-old daughter. Law enforcement agencies across Ohio and beyond have extended their heartfelt condolences to Hamilton’s family and fellow deputies during this difficult time.
Investigation and Road Closure
The Ohio State Highway Patrol has taken charge of the crash investigation to determine the circumstances leading to this tragic accident. As a result of the collision, both the north and south lanes of state Route 503 were temporarily closed. However, they have since been reopened, allowing for the smooth flow of traffic.
