San Diego, California – Two young brothers, Malikai and Mason Orozco-Romero, lost their lives in a devastating car accident on December 8th. The incident occurred when a car being pursued by the police collided with their family’s vehicle, resulting in a heartbreaking tragedy.

According to reports, the boys, aged 8 and 4, were identified through a GoFundMe campaign initiated by Malikai’s godmother. The community has rallied together to provide support during this difficult time.

Authorities have charged Angel Velazquez Salgado, a 20-year-old individual, with two counts of murder, gross vehicular manslaughter, hit and run, felony evading, and driving without a license, according to jail records. Salgado pleaded not guilty to these charges during his court appearance, as reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The tragic collision took place on an off-ramp at Interstate 405, according to the Union-Tribune, ABC 10, and CBS8, all of which cited law enforcement sources. The reports suggest that the police were in pursuit of a BMW allegedly driven by Salgado, which ultimately crashed into the Honda carrying the Orozco-Romero family. The impact caused the vehicle to collide with a tree and burst into flames. Prosecutors allege that Salgado was driving at speeds of approximately 100 miles per hour during the high-speed chase.

Brittany Phommavong, the organizer of the GoFundMe campaign, revealed that the boys’ mother, Victoria, sustained critical injuries in the accident. Tragically, the boys’ father had passed away the previous year, adding to the family’s immense grief and loss.

“Despite the challenges they faced, Malikai and Mason always wore bright smiles on their faces,” Phommavong wrote in the campaign description. “This tragedy is incredibly unfair, and I am at a loss for words. I deeply appreciate the love and support shown by everyone.”

The GoFundMe campaign has managed to raise over $20,000, demonstrating the community’s compassion and willingness to support the grieving family during this devastating time.
