NYPD Officer Shoots Suspect Who Charged at Him with Scissors in Bronx

Bronx, NY (NYPD) — On Friday, April 21, 2023, at approximately 8:36 a.m., a concerned civilian witness contacted 911 to report a disturbing incident in which a man, later identified as 38-year-old Lorne Gordon, was seen walking around 972 Washington Avenue while holding a pair of scissors. The witness found Gordon’s behavior alarming and promptly notified the authorities. Responding to the call, officers from the 42nd Precinct arrived at the scene but Gordon had already left. Determined to locate him, the officers disseminated his description to their colleagues assisting in the search.

Around 8:55 a.m., Police Officer Eliezel Penadiaz and Police Officer Frank Voce spotted Gordon and approached him cautiously. Fearing for their safety, the officers commanded Gordon to drop the scissors he held in his right hand. However, instead of complying, Gordon aggressively threw a backpack at Officer Penadiaz and charged towards him brandishing the pair of scissors. In response to the imminent threat, Officer Penadiaz discharged three shots from his service firearm.

Following the incident, Gordon received immediate medical attention as he was transported by ambulance to Lincoln Hospital Medical Center. The medical staff at the hospital provided the necessary treatment for his injuries sustained during the altercation.
