Worker Hospitalized After Being Hit by Vehicle While Responding to Wreck on I-57

Early Sunday morning, Illinois State Police received a distress call regarding an incident on I-57 northbound near 108th Street. The accident involved an IDOT maintenance worker who was performing traffic control duties following a crash on the right shoulder of the highway.

The worker, who had activated emergency lights to ensure the safety of the scene, was in the process of placing flares on the road when a Nissan Rogue collided with an Audi in the second lane. Unfortunately, the Nissan failed to change lanes and struck the IDOT worker on the right shoulder. The injured worker was immediately transported to the hospital by ambulance, and their current condition is unknown.

The driver of the Nissan, identified as 29-year-old Kennethia Howliet from Chicago, has been cited by the Illinois State Police for violating Scott’s Law. In addition, Howliet was also charged with failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

In light of this incident, law enforcement authorities are urging all drivers in Illinois to exercise caution by reducing their speed and changing lanes when approaching emergency vehicles or other vehicles displaying hazard lights. Failure to comply with this law can result in severe consequences. For a first offense, violators may face a substantial fine of $250 or even more than $10,000.

This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder to all motorists to prioritize the safety of emergency workers and fellow drivers on the road. By adhering to traffic laws and exercising vigilance, we can collectively contribute to a safer driving environment for everyone.
