A Tragic Incident at Evergreen State College: Student Found Dead and Others Hospitalized

OLYMPIA, Wash. (KING) – In a heart-wrenching turn of events, a college student from Washington state has lost their life, while two others are currently receiving medical treatment after exhibiting “symptoms consistent with carbon monoxide poisoning” inside a student housing unit at Evergreen State College.

The distressing incident unfolded when a residential manager at Evergreen State College contacted campus police around 8:30 p.m. on Monday after failed attempts to get a response from the students residing in unit 305. Consequently, an officer took the necessary action of forcibly entering the premises and immediately initiated CPR upon finding the affected individuals.

All three individuals, including the officer, were promptly transported to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, one of the students, identified as 21-year-old Jonathan Rodriguez, tragically succumbed to the suspected carbon monoxide poisoning, as confirmed by the Thurston County coroner.

The prevailing belief is that this devastating incident was a result of carbon monoxide poisoning, which remains a grave concern for many living in shared accommodations.

Jacob Benjamin, a fellow student residing adjacent to unit 305, recounted the distressing scene as paramedics carried an unconscious student out of the building. Benjamin strongly suspects that the individual was Rodriguez, sharing, “They picked him up, and he was naked and unresponsive. His eyes were wide open. It was a lot. I didn’t know them personally, but I didn’t have to.”

Executive Vice President Dr. Dexter Gordon expressed the deep sorrow felt by the entire institution, emphasizing their commitment to providing support to both staff and students affected by this tragedy. He stated, “It is devastating news for us, and we’re seeking to make sure our students are safe.”

Evergreen State College is fully cooperating with the Washington State Patrol’s investigation to determine the cause of this incident and implement measures to prevent a recurrence in the future.

Investigators are currently focusing on a carbon monoxide alarm that had previously sounded, prompting the summoning of a contractor to the unit where Rodriguez tragically lost his life.

Freshman Fritz Irwin expressed concerns, stating, “That’s scary because I’m wondering, ‘Well, are the monoxide alarms working in the dorms? What if something like that happens?'”

To address these concerns, a college spokesperson assured that all living units on campus are equipped with functional smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, ensuring the safety of the students.
