Man Arrested for Possession of Stolen Vehicle and Controlled Substance in Morganton

Introduction

A 30-year-old man from Spartanburg, South Carolina, named Austin Blake Berrong-Mahaffey, was apprehended by Morganton Public Safety Officers on Thursday, December 7. The charges against him include possession of a stolen motor vehicle and a schedule II controlled substance. Additionally, he faces allegations of failure to register a vehicle, driving while his license was revoked, and unsafe passing.

The Arrest

In the early hours of Thursday morning, a Public Safety Officer initiated a traffic stop on a 2004 Pontiac GTO. The vehicle was pulled over on Sanford Drive in Morganton. The officer approached the driver, who was later identified as Berrong-Mahaffey. After conducting a thorough investigation, the suspect was taken into custody.

Legal Proceedings

Berrong-Mahaffey was promptly incarcerated in the Burke County Jail, where he currently remains, unable to post the $15,000 secured bond. As of today, December 8, he has not been released. A District Court appearance was scheduled for Thursday, and while no future court dates have been confirmed yet, it is expected that the legal process will proceed accordingly.
