Born on July 4, 1940, in Durban, South Africa, Professor Coovadia dedicated his life to the betterment of public health and made significant contributions to the medical community.

Professor Coovadia’s journey in the field of medicine began at the University of Natal, where he obtained his medical degree in 1966. He then pursued further studies in the United Kingdom, specializing in pediatrics and infectious diseases. Upon his return to South Africa, he joined the University of Natal’s medical school as a lecturer, eventually rising to the position of Head of the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health.

Throughout his illustrious career, Professor Coovadia displayed an unwavering commitment to tackling infectious diseases, particularly HIV/AIDS. His groundbreaking research on mother-to-child transmission of HIV led to the development of effective prevention and treatment strategies, saving countless lives globally.
