It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Monique Bégin, a prominent Canadian politician and founder of the Fédération des femmes du Québec. Bégin, who served as a Minister in the Canadian government, has left an indelible mark on the country’s political landscape.
Born on March 1, 1936, in Rome, Italy, Bégin immigrated to Canada in 1955. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Montreal in 1961 and went on to specialize in pediatric medicine. Bégin’s passion for social justice and women’s rights led her to become a pioneer in the feminist movement in Canada.
In 1969, Bégin founded the Fédération des femmes du Québec (Quebec Federation of Women) to advocate for gender equality and women’s rights. Her tireless efforts within the organization helped shape the feminist movement in Quebec and across Canada.
