Chaney, a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, attended high school at the Findlay Prep academy in Henderson, Nevada. He then played for two seasons at the University of Arkansas before transferring to Houston in 2020. During the 2022-2023 season, he was named the AAC Sixth Man of the Year and played in 35 games, starting one.
Chaney had a productive college career, averaging three points, 2.7 rebounds, and 0.7 steals per game. He averaged 4.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per game during his two seasons with the Razorbacks.
