Chaney, a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, attended high school at the Findlay Prep academy in Henderson, Nevada. He then played for two seasons at the University of Arkansas before transferring to Houston in 2020. During the 2022-2023 season, he was named the AAC Sixth Man of the Year and played in 35 games, starting one.

Chaney had a productive college career, averaging three points, 2.7 rebounds, and 0.7 steals per game. He averaged 4.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per game during his two seasons with the Razorbacks.

The news of Chaney’s death has devastated the basketball community. Arkansas basketball operations director and former coach Matt Zimmerman expressed his sadness, saying, “It breaks your heart that he’s passed away at such a young age.” Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson also shared his grief, calling Chaney his “security blanket” and praising his reliability as a teammate.
