Renowned Educator and World Traveler, Dr. Norman Ricketts Hall, Passes Away at 100

McQueeney, Texas – Dr. Norman Ricketts Hall, a distinguished educator and avid traveler, peacefully passed away on August 15, 2023, at the remarkable age of 100. His remarkable life and contributions to education will be celebrated during a memorial service at the First Methodist Church in Seguin on Friday, August 25, at 10:30 am. Reverend Ray Perales will officiate the service, followed by a reception in Hierholzer Hall. Interment at the historic Old Killeen City Cemetery will take place at a later date.

Born on October 2, 1922, in Bell County, Texas, Norman Ricketts Hall was the beloved son of Dock and Lola Hall. He received his early education in Killeen, ultimately graduating from Killeen High School. Continuing his academic journey, he pursued higher education at Texas A&M University, where he earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. Later on, he obtained his Doctorate at Colorado State Teachers College.

Norman’s love story began when he married Billye Murlyne Barr. Together, they embarked on a new chapter in Atascadero, California. Norman’s dedication to serving his country led him to the United States Army, where he served with distinction and achieved the rank of Major. He continued his service in the Army Reserve until his retirement. Norman and Billye’s shared passion for exploration and adventure took them to over 100 countries and numerous islands around the world.

Throughout his career in education, Dr. Hall held various administrative positions, leaving an indelible mark on the communities he served. He served as superintendent of schools in Lampasas, Andrews, Huffman, Round Rock, and Richard Milburn Academy. Remarkably, he continued working in the education field well into his nineties before finally retiring. His dedication and leadership were recognized by his peers, resulting in his appointment as the national president of the American Association of School Administrators. Additionally, he was an active member of the Texas State Teachers Associations and the Texas Association of School Administrators.

Dr. Norman Ricketts Hall is survived by his two sons, Norman (Skip) Hall, Jr. and Charlie Hall, along with their respective wives, Beth and Vicky. He also leaves behind his grandsons, Randy, Caleb, and Nathan, along with their partners. The joy of his life in recent years came from his great-grandchildren, Remi, Rowe, and Ripp. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dock and Lola, his brothers Bob Smith and Buddy Smith, and his beloved wife of 73 years, Billye.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contributions to be made to the First Methodist Church in Seguin, Texas, or to a charity of your choice, honoring Dr. Hall’s commitment to education and community service.
