Denver Judge Karen Brody set a $10 million cash-only bond for Gavin Seymour, who is charged with five counts of murder in connection with a 2020 house fire that killed a Senegalese family. This hearing was held following a recent Colorado Supreme Court ruling that denied bail for capital offenses. The fire, suspected to be arson, resulted in the deaths of five individuals, including a toddler and an infant. Seymour, along with two other teens, allegedly targeted the home in a case of mistaken identity. Prosecutors argued for the high bond due to the severity of the crime and the number of victims. A judge in Denver has set a $10 million cash-only bond for Gavin Seymour, a defendant charged with five counts of murder in connection with a house fire that killed a Senegalese family in 2020. The bond was set following a recent Colorado Supreme Court ruling that denied the denial of bail for capital offenses. Seymour is facing multiple charges including first-degree murder, attempted murder, arson, burglary, and conspiracy. The fire, which was suspected to be arson, resulted in the deaths of Djibril and Adja Diol, their 2-year-old daughter Khadija, Hassan Diol, and her infant daughter Hawa Baye. Seymour was arrested, along with two other teens, in January 2021. During the hearing, family members of the victims spoke, expressing their forgiveness but also their belief that Seymour should remain in custody. Prosecutors argued for a $10 million bond due to the severity of the case and the loss to the community. The defense requested a $500,000 bond. The judge ultimately set the bond at $10 million, citing the nature of the offense, concern for community safety, and the number of victims. The bond includes maximum supervision and the surrender of Seymour’s passport and travel documents. The fire, which was started with gasoline, was believed to be a case of mistaken identity, as the defendants thought a stolen iPhone was inside the home. Social media played a role in helping identify the suspects..
