Nomfusi Potelwa-Mpafa, a teacher and poet, was a victim of a shooting incident at her home in Govan Mbeki Township, Dutywa. The incident was documented on Facebook.

The family members of Nomfusi Potelwa-Mpafa (46), a highly regarded teacher and poet, who tragically lost her life when she was fatally shot at her residence on August 8, describe her as a person who always advocated for peace. Potelwa-Mpafa was employed as a teacher at Dinizulu Senior Secondary School in Dutywa.

Her funeral service will take place on August 19 at Gxara locality in Dutywa.

According to a spokesperson for the family, Vusi Potelwa, Potelwa-Mpafa passed away at home as a result of gunshot wounds inflicted by unidentified attackers. The spokesperson expressed their grief over the loss of a family member who always prioritized her loved ones.

According to Vusi Potelwa, Potelwa-Mpafa was a mother of three and tragically met her demise while making preparations for her son’s initiation ceremony scheduled for December 28.

“She always demonstrated love and provided support whenever it was required. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh,” expressed Potelwa.

Fundile Gade, the Eastern Cape Department of Education’s MEC, extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Potelwa-Mpafa. He also conveyed his sympathies to the grieving family and friends, hoping that they would find solace in their faith during this challenging period.

Mali Mtima, the spokesperson for the Department of Education, stated that the exact details of the incident remain unknown, and a case has been registered with the South African Police Services, who are currently conducting an investigation.

“All individuals affected by the incident at the school will receive psycho-social support, as the district will initiate the necessary services,” explained Mtima.

Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, a police spokesperson, confirmed that the police are investigating a murder case following the fatal shooting of Potelwa-Mpafa at her residence in Dutywa.

Nkohli revealed that on August 8, 2023, at approximately 21:15, four unidentified men forcefully entered a house in Govan Mbeki Township and shot the victim.

“The victim was later identified as Nomfusi Potelwa-Mpafa. The motive behind the incident is currently unknown, but the police are pursuing all potential leads,” stated Nkohli.
