A police officer in Brick Township was injured during an incident where a resident fired a gun at the officer and then turned the weapon on himself, contrary to initial reports.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office revealed that the officer suffered minor injuries to his arm from glass shards when the shot was fired at the windshield of his patrol vehicle. The officer, whose identity remains undisclosed, was taken to Ocean University Medical Center in Brick Township for treatment and has since been released.
The incident occurred on Monday at around 8:40 a.m. after the Brick police received a 911 call from a woman who reported that her ex-husband, Corey Johnson, 28, of Brick Township, had broken into her residence in the Evergreen Woods apartment complex. The woman had left her workplace and was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher when she arrived at the parking lot of her residence and found Johnson blocking her in with his vehicle.
Upon the arrival of a Brick Township police officer, Johnson exited his vehicle and fired a shot towards the officer, hitting the windshield of the officer’s vehicle. Johnson then turned the gun on himself, shooting himself in the head. Although he survived the self-inflicted gunshot, he was in critical condition at a different hospital at the time of the last update.
No further updates regarding Johnson’s condition have been provided by authorities. The prosecutor’s office stated that additional information related to this ongoing investigation will be disclosed to the public when it becomes available.
