A man is facing assault with a deadly weapon charges after allegedly brandishing a firearm during a dispute with his brother over bathroom privileges.

On August 13, the Coral Springs Police Department received a report of an aggravated assault involving a firearm, resulting in injuries, at a residence near the 300 block of 118th Avenue.

According to the police report, officers encountered Frank Kim, a 41-year-old resident of Coral Springs, who claimed that the altercation began when his brother returned home and requested to use the bathroom.

Frank explained to the officers that he was in the process of cleaning the bathroom and asked his brother to wait, which led to a verbal argument escalating into a potentially life-threatening situation.

Frank alleged that his brother started throwing various household items, including a speaker. In an act of self-defense, Frank swatted away the speaker, injuring his right thumb in the process.

According to records, Frank claimed that he resorted to drawing his firearm as a last measure for self-defense. However, he denied racking the gun or pointing it at his brother.

After speaking with Frank, officers interviewed the victim, who provided a different version of events. According to the victim, as the argument escalated, both individuals threw objects at each other, and Frank not only drew his firearm but also racked it and pointed it at him while making threats.

In fear for his life, the victim fled the residence and called 911. The police report mentions that the siblings’ mother was present during the incident.

After conducting an investigation and interviewing all parties involved, including the parents of the brothers, the police concluded that there was sufficient evidence to believe that Frank committed the offense of aggravated assault with a firearm, and that his actions were not solely in self-defense.

Frank Kim was taken into custody and transported to Broward Health Coral Springs for treatment and medical clearance for his right thumb injury and reported abdominal pain. Upon clearance, he was transferred to Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail.
