An off-duty deputy from the Los Angeles County sheriff’s department was fatally shot by Fontana police officers during a mental health crisis. The incident occurred on a golf course near the deputy’s residence. Upon receiving a report of gunfire, Fontana police arrived at the Sierra Lakes Golf Club to find the off-duty deputy armed with a handgun. As the officers attempted to engage with him, the deputy pointed his weapon at them, resulting in multiple officers firing their own firearms. Fortunately, no officers were injured during the confrontation, which took place near the golf clubhouse.

Emergency medical personnel provided immediate treatment to the unidentified deputy at the scene before transporting him to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. According to sources familiar with the matter, the off-duty deputy was residing in a house adjacent to the golf course and was experiencing a mental health crisis. These sources indicated that the deputy exhibited visible distress and displayed signs of potential alcohol influence.

The initial call that prompted the Fontana police response reported shots fired and a potential domestic violence incident in the 16000 block of Colonial Drive. The deputy’s identity has not been disclosed by the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, although they expressed their condolences and stated their cooperation with the ongoing investigation conducted by the Fontana Police Department and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Witnesses interviewed by KTLA-TV Channel 5 claimed that the deputy had discharged his weapon on his property and into the air on the golf course before the arrival of law enforcement officers.
