A man in Middletown, Conn., is facing charges after allegedly assaulting a police officer over the weekend. The incident occurred on Saturday morning when the Middletown police received a complaint about noise and breaking glass at a residence on Liberty Street. Disturbing body camera footage, released on Tuesday, shows the suspect, identified as Winston Tate, attacking the officer with a hammer. It is important to note that the video contains graphic content that may be disturbing to some viewers. The officer, Detective Karli Travis, sustained multiple blows from the hammer before managing to shoot Tate, who was subsequently apprehended. Tate made an appearance in court on Tuesday, during which the state’s attorney labeled him as dangerous and expressed concern for public safety. Tate displayed a dismissive attitude during the proceedings, shaking his head and closing his eyes as the attack was described. At one point, he even attempted to remove his prison jumpsuit, but was calmed down by a public defender. Detective Travis was taken to Middlesex Hospital for treatment of her injuries and has since been released. The Middletown Police Chief, Erik Costa, commended Travis as a hero and stated that she is now resting comfortably at home with support from her colleagues. Prior to this incident, the police had been called to Tate’s residence five times in the last month due to disturbances. It was revealed that Tate had previously served jail time for assaulting police officers in 2017 and 2020. Despite these previous convictions, he was on probation for the 2020 attack when he allegedly assaulted Detective Travis. Chief Costa highlighted Tate’s extensive criminal history, dating back to 1995. The Middletown police union expressed hope that Tate would face the appropriate consequences for his actions this time, after attempting to murder an officer. Chief Costa emphasized Detective Travis’ strength and referred to her as a heroine. Tate was released from the hospital on Monday and now faces charges including criminal attempt to commit first-degree assault, second-degree assault, assault on public safety personnel, and interfering with police. An ongoing investigation into the incident is being conducted by the inspector general’s office. The full, unedited body camera footage can be viewed by following the provided link..
