Two teenagers were killed and another severely injured in a high-speed crash near Winnie, Texas. The vehicle was reportedly going at least 100 mph when it crashed into a tractor. The driver of the car was able to escape, but the two passengers died. The surviving teen was flown to a Houston hospital with serious injuries. The community gathered to mourn the loss of the two teens, who had just started their senior year at a local high school. Two teenagers tragically lost their lives in a car accident near Winnie, Texas on Saturday night, with another teenager sustaining serious injuries, as reported by Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne. The incident unfolded when multiple 911 calls alerted authorities to a reckless vehicle speeding on SH 124, passing through High Island and continuing westbound on FM 1985 at around 8:30 p.m. Hawthorne stated that the vehicle was traveling at a minimum speed of 100 mph, exceeding the posted speed limit by approximately 20 mph.

While law enforcement personnel were dispatched to locate the dangerous vehicle, it collided with a large tractor hauling farming equipment near the East Bay Bayou. Upon arrival at the crash site, first responders discovered the vehicle engulfed in flames. Tragically, two passengers succumbed to their injuries, while the driver managed to escape the wreckage. The surviving teenager was airlifted to a Houston hospital for treatment of severe injuries. The tractor driver was transported to a Beaumont hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

On Sunday evening, a memorial service took place at Anahuac High School football field to honor the lives lost in the accident. The victims, who had recently begun their senior year at the school, were well-known in the community and were also members of the school’s football team. The Anahuac ISD superintendent requested privacy to allow students and the community to grieve. The district has made additional counseling services available to students and staff during the upcoming week.

Sheriff Hawthorne confirmed that the Texas Department of Public Safety would assume responsibility for the investigation.
