The driver of the speeding vehicle managed to exit the car and was transported by air to Houston for medical treatment, as confirmed by officials from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). The incident occurred near Winnie on Saturday night and resulted in the tragic deaths of two teenagers, with another teenager sustaining severe injuries. Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne reported that multiple 911 calls were made regarding a reckless vehicle traveling from the beach on SH 124 through High Island and then heading westbound on FM 1985 at approximately 8:30 p.m. The vehicle was estimated to be traveling at a speed of at least 100 mph, which exceeded the posted speed limit by approximately 20 mph. Before authorities could reach the location, the speeding vehicle collided with a large tractor that was transporting farm equipment near the East Bay Bayou. Upon arrival at the crash site, emergency responders discovered the vehicle completely engulfed in flames. While two passengers tragically lost their lives in the crash, the driver managed to escape. The surviving teenager was flown to a Houston hospital with serious injuries, while the tractor driver was taken to a Beaumont hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. On Sunday night, a memorial gathering was held at the Anahuac High School football field to honor the lives of the two deceased teenagers, who had recently begun their senior year at the school. The community turned out in large numbers to offer prayers and express their thoughts on the impact of the tragedy. The three teenagers involved in the accident were well-known in the town and were also football players. The Anahuac ISD superintendent requested privacy out of respect for the students and the community, and the district announced that additional counseling services would be available to students and staff in the coming week. Sheriff Hawthorne stated that the Texas Department of Public Safety would be leading the investigation..
