A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot on Green Bay Road in Highland Park, Illinois. The shooting occurred on August 13, 2023, around 11:30 a.m. Highland Park police responded to the scene and found the victim unresponsive. The suspect, described as a male dressed in all black, fled on foot. The investigation is ongoing. Cardinal News reported

A teenager has tragically lost their life after being shot on Green Bay Road in Highland Park. The incident occurred on Sunday, August 13, 2023, at approximately 11:30 a.m. The Highland Park police, along with firefighters and paramedics, swiftly responded to a report of a shooting in the 2300 block of Green Bay Road. Upon arrival, they found a 16-year-old male victim who was unresponsive. The police secured the scene while paramedics provided advanced life support. The victim was then transported to Highland Park hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The teenager was later identified as a resident of Highwood, a nearby town.

According to witnesses, a Hispanic male who appeared to be around 16 years old received CPR at the scene. Another witness reported seeing a Good Samaritan trying to stop the bleeding with a towel. Additionally, a neighbor heard two shots, while another witness heard a single ‘pop’ near the crime scene.

In an effort to apprehend the perpetrator, the Highland Park Police established a perimeter around the area and enlisted the help of neighboring police departments from Lake Forest, Deerfield, and Riverwoods. A police K-9 was deployed to track the offender’s scent, but it was lost at a nearby roadway. Investigators also searched the vicinity for any surveillance cameras that might have captured the suspect’s image.

The offender was described as a male dressed entirely in black who arrived at the scene on a bicycle. However, further investigation revealed that he likely fled on foot after the shooting, leaving the bicycle behind. The bicycle was described as dark-colored with a silver front-wheel fork, regular handlebars, and black handles with handbrakes. Forensic experts collected fingerprints from the handlebars as potential evidence.

The Highland Park Police Department requested assistance from the Lake County Major Crime Task Force to aid in the investigation. Initial findings indicate that the shooting was not a random act and that the victim was specifically targeted. Prior to the shooting, the victim was walking on the sidewalk when he was approached by the offender. They engaged in a brief conversation before the offender produced a firearm and shot the victim.

After conducting an on-scene investigation, the Lake County Major Crime Task Force and Highland Park Police Department detectives continue to work on the case. The Highland Park police reopened Green Bay Road around 5:15 p.m.

The shooting occurred approximately 800 feet northwest of the Highland Park High School’s soccer field, tennis courts, and northwest corner of the building.

The Highland Park Police Department stated that there is currently no known threat to the community.
