A man from Maryland has been arrested after causing a series of hit-and-run incidents involving a stolen ambulance and a stolen truck on major highways in northern Virginia. The suspect, identified as Darell T. Caldwell, was apprehended in the District of Columbia. Fortunately, there were no reports of serious injuries resulting from the crashes on Interstate 66, I-395, and the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Virginia State Police, along with federal and local law enforcement, have charged Caldwell with multiple offenses, while state police charges are still pending. The 30-year-old suspect is currently undergoing evaluation at a hospital.

The string of accidents began when state police responded to a two-vehicle crash on eastbound I-66, where Caldwell was identified as the driver of a stolen truck. Shortly after, another multi-vehicle crash occurred on northbound I-395, caused by the same stolen truck, resulting in five people being sent to the hospital.

Caldwell fled on foot and was then involved in another crash on the Parkway, this time driving another stolen truck in the wrong direction, colliding with another car. It remains unclear how Caldwell obtained the second stolen vehicle. As medics were attending to another driver at the scene, Caldwell took advantage of the situation and drove off in an Arlington County ambulance, which had arrived to respond to the I-395 crash.

A trooper, alerted about the stolen ambulance, initiated a pursuit and managed to catch up to the emergency vehicle. However, during the course of the chase, the ambulance stopped in the road and rammed into the trooper’s patrol car as the trooper was exiting. Both state and Arlington County police joined in the pursuit, which eventually led onto the I-395 express lanes and into Washington, where the stolen ambulance collided with a parked car. Caldwell was then taken into custody without any further incidents.

One of the victims, Hailey Ruggiero, was rear-ended by the stolen ambulance near Reagan National Airport. She expressed her gratitude for surviving the incident but hopes that justice will be served for all those affected.
