CLINTON, CT — The identity of an elderly woman who tragically lost her life in a canoeing accident on the Hammonasset River has been revealed. The 81-year-old woman, Qiuhua Gua from Madison, was involved in the incident on Saturday morning. Emergency crews from Madison, Clinton, and the state of Connecticut responded to the scene after receiving reports of an overturned canoe and a woman in the water. It was later discovered that Gua was part of a state park-led guided canoe program, along with two other individuals. Thankfully, Gua was wearing a life jacket, while the other adult and child on board escaped unharmed. Madison Ambulance personnel transported Gua to the Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Clinic, where she was sadly pronounced dead. EnCon police are currently investigating the incident, and the exact cause and manner of Gua’s death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
